Think about the significant moves you have made in your life… your first apartment… your first home… perhaps even moving to a brand new city. Whatever your scenario, chances are that someone special in your life wanted you to feel warmly welcomed into your new “digs” by presenting you with a housewarming gift idea that remains as memorable today as it was the day you received it. Keeping this thought top of mind, we offer a few friendly pointers to assist you when it’s your turn to reciprocate the welcome:
* VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE
When you approach “gifting” as a means to touch someone’s heart, giving a gift is equally as enjoyable as receiving one when concentrated thought and effort are put into the gift prior to its purchase.
One of the best ways to achieve this feeling, and in order to create a unique housewarming gift, we recommend choosing a variety of small gift items within a specific theme that you know will be very personal to your gift recipient(s).
For example, maybe your new home dwellers have a fondness for all things Italian. Why not “gift” all the makings and trimmings for an Italian dinner at home! Don’t concentrate strictly on edible gift items (more on this in the point below), but think about providing tangible gift items to create a full-rounded housewarming gift presentation — things like an oil bottle with matching dipping dishes, a pasta bowl, a red and white checkered tablecloth, wine glasses, etc. Voila! Theme + Variety = Happy Gift Recipients.
* EDIBLES ARE DELISH, BUT ONCE THEY’RE GONE… THEY’RE GONE!
Don’t get us wrong, we love a traditional housewarming gift that includes a box of fine chocolates or a bottle of sparkling champagne as much as anyone. But keep in mind that once the delectable treats are gone, so too will be the memory of the gift you have given!
With that said, why not include a candy dish in a whimsical design to display the gift of chocolates? And if wine or champagne is your gift of choice, bottle coasters or “sleeves” are extremely popular and come in a variety of styles and materials.
Think about a tangible gift item you received and have used time and again over the years. Chances are, memories of the person who gave you the gift will surely be top of mind each time it’s used. Now THAT’s our favorite kind of housewarming gift idea!
* PERSONALIZE IT!
Whenever possible, go out of your way to find a personalized housewarming gift. By “personalized,” we are not necessarily talking about something engraved or embroidered with someone’s name or initials. Instead, put some careful consideration into a gift that you know will touch someone on a personal level. The best gift items are those whose price value is outweighed by their sentimental value.
Another good idea is to hand write a note or card expressing your warm congratulations. There is something very personal about taking the time to put your thoughts into writing, and it’s a pretty safe bet that your note will be kept as a special memento for years to come.

Robert smiled warmly at her as he handed her Christmas present. The box was beautifully crafted with angels and silver stars embellished on the wrapping. Natalie giddily opened it, anticipating for the gift he had bought her. Christmas was her favorite Holiday of the year. It always gave her the feeling of heavenly bliss. She could remember her first Christmas as if it were yesterday. After climbing out of her crib, she would totter her way to the living room to see her parents sitting next to the tree with scores of presents underneath the tree. She would notice white crystal-like things falling outside of the bay window. Curious, she went up to the window and peered outside. All of the roofs in the neighborhood were covered with the strange, white substance.
“You’re up!” her parents cheered. “Merry Christmas!”
Natalie just looked at them wide-eyed. She had no idea what the occasion was or why there presents surrounding the strange looking tree. But she knew it was a good thing just by the looks on her parents face. So she went along with the unfamiliar celebration and found herself to love it ever since.
“What is it!” she asked, running her delicate fingers across the packaging.
“Open it and see,”
Natalie’s heart suddenly did a back flip. “What did you say?”
“’Open it and see.’” he repeated. “Is there something wrong?”
“Oh—no, no. I just—thought of something.”
Where had she heard that phrase before? She remembered asking someone about something and their answer always being “Wait and see”, “Watch and see”, or “Open it and see.” It usually always ended with an “…And see.”
Deciding it was nothing, she carefully unwrapped the gift. Her eyes knew what it was before she could even finish unwrapping the gift. She stared at the glass sculpted angel laying inside the box. It reflected under the white Christmas lights that hung from the tree. The angel must have been handcrafted because it was extraordinarily beautiful.
“Wow,” she said. “It’s gorgeous.”
“I figured it would match you perfectly.”
“Thank you,” she said sincerely. “But you shouldn’t have gotten me this.”
Robert’s eyes suddenly dimmed a little bit. “What do you mean?”
“Nothing, I love it. But it looks expensive.”
“I spent my hard earned money on this.”
“You didn’t have to this.”
“Oh, it was the least I could do.” he said, his face contorting a little bit.
She thought she saw something strange in his eyes, but she thought nothing of it. All she could think about was how amazing this present was. Who could afford something like this? A person who was the CEO of a census company.
All of a sudden, like a flash of light, she saw the hand of her lover coming down on her like a ton of bricks. She didn’t even see it coming. The next thing she knew she was lying on the floor whimpering in pain.
“Robert—wha—?”
“You think you’re too good for this?” he demanded, picking up the glass angel off of the floor. “I work hard just to get you this and you’re gonna be ungrateful! Are you outta your fucking mind!”
“What are you talking about!”
“That’s fine!” he shouted.
And with deliberate force, he threw the fragile angel across the room. It smashed into smithereens when it came into contact with the wall. Natalie didn’t say anything. She was in shock from what had just happened. She didn’t understand it at all. One minute they were laughing and opening up each others presents, and the next minute he was looking down on her like a wolf stalking his prey. It was the worst Christmas of her life.

Interesting, but a bit abrupt. I’m kind of left thinking ‘huh?’.
